[ARCHIVED] Bike Laws: Reminders to Everyone Who Shares the Road

Bike Laws

With our location in the region, Creve Coeur has many arterial thoroughfares, including Ladue Road, Olive Boulevard and Conway Road. These roads often see large amounts of bicycle traffic while regional riders travel through our city. Roadway safety is the responsibility of everyone using our roads—motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians.

We hope to remind everyone who shares our roadway of their legal responsibility and rights as they drive and bike on our streets. We must all share this responsibility, act together and be respectful of each other's rights to share the road. Together, we can share the roads and make our community safer for everyone to enjoy.

  • Bike LawsA bicyclist is granted all rights of other motorists and must follow all applicable laws as the driver of a vehicle. (RSMo 307.188)
  • When a bike lane or path is present, bikes have the right-of-way, and vehicles must yield to the bicycle in the bike lane. (Ord 340.050)
  • When a bike lane or path is present, bicycles must use the bike lane or path and may not ride in the traffic lane. (Ord 370.050)
  • When a bike lane is not present, bicycles must ride "as near to the right side of the roadway as safe." (Ord 370.050)
  • When the driver of a vehicle passes a bicyclist, they must leave a safe distance and maintain enough clearance to safely pass the bicyclist. (Ord 340.165)
  • Every bicycle operated on a street 30 minutes after sunset or 30 minutes before sunrise must be equipped with a white headlight and a red taillight, or a red reflector on the rear. There should also be reflectors on the pedals or rider's shoes, and reflective material or lights visible from both sides of the bike. (Ord 370.030)
  • A bicyclist may ride on the shoulder of a road but is not required to use the shoulder. (RSMo 307.191)
  • Bike helmets are required when riding bikes on a public roadway, public bike path, or other public right of way. (Ord 370.130)
  • Motorists must drive in a careful and prudent manner and cannot do anything that endangers the safety or property of a bicyclist, pedestrian or another motorist. (RSMo 304.012)
  • Bicyclists may ride on the sidewalk except in the Core Business District: generally along Olive Boulevard between 12300 Olive and I-270, and along N. New Ballas Road between Olive and 400 N. New Ballas. (Ord 370.150)
  • A bicyclist may violate a red electric signal after coming to a complete stop; after the red light continues to show for an unreasonable time; the traffic control is apparently malfunctioning; or, if programmed or engineered to change to a green light only after detecting the approach of a motor vehicle, the signal has apparently failed to detect the arrival of the motorcycle; and no motor vehicle or person is approaching on the street be crossed or is so far away from the intersection that it does not constitute an immediate hazard. (RSMo 304.285)
